Nigerian music has been doing well for sometimes now, especially with fans opting to listen to songs produced by Nigerian artistes as opposed to their international counterparts.
Interestingly, this change in attitude has been traced to returnee Nigerians who could not make it, musically, abroad before returning home and are now mega stars.
From D’banj to Tiwa Savage and even the younger generation in erstwhile Aristokrat Records artiste, Burna Boy, the story is not different.
D’banj, is known to have been part of the JJC 419 Squad before moving on as a solo artiste. As part of the Squad, he did not make any impact musically before returning to the country with Don Jazzy. Together with Don Jazzy, he launched his music career which has seen him not only making cool cash, but producing stunning albums too.
The same applies for Tiwa Savage who has continued to tell all who care to listen that while abroad she was a successful songwriter who had worked with names like George Michael at the age of 16, and lent vocals to other musicians such as Mary J. Blige, Chaka Khan, Blu Cantrell, Emma Bunton, Kelly Clarkson, Andrea Bocelli, Sting, 50 Cent, The Black Eyed Peas, Eminem, Robbie Williams and Ms. Dynamite, forgetting that her music break only came when she returned to the country with her husband, T-Billz, a few years back.
Today, Mavin Record’s boss and one of Nigeria’s ace producers, Don Jazzy,is highly revered.
However, his break only came when he returned to the country.
Musicians who have the same storyline are Sauce Kid, late Goldie, Seyi Shay and LAX to mention a few.
Although, these returnee artistes had a bleak beginning abroad they reign as big music brands presently.
However, the puzzle is,would they ever get the kind of international popularity Nigerian born music greats like Sade Adu, Seal and Lemar have on global music stage.
