The Red Chamber has passed a vote of confidence of its president, Senator Godswill Akpabio.
This comes amidst the allegation of sexual harassment brought against the Senate President by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.
In a show of support for Akpabio, the Senate overwhelmingly passed a vote of confidence on him today, Thursday, March 13.
The decision comes 48 hours after Akpoti-Uduaghan (PDP, Kogi Central), addressed the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in New York, claiming she was suspended for raising allegations of sexual harassment against Akpabio.
The Senate has urged Nigerians not to be distracted by the allegations, emphasizing that the matter is already before the court. Citing Order 40 of its standing rules, the Senate stated it could not interfere in an issue under judicial consideration.
The vote of confidence in Akpabio was passed unanimously during Thursday’s plenary, following a motion moved by Senate Leader Michael Opeyemi Bamidele (Ekiti Central) and seconded by Deputy Minority Leader Olalere Oyewumi (Osun West).
