The democratic government of Burkina Faso has been toppled by a military coup.
The development also sees President Marc Christian Kabore sacked with the National Assembly of the country abolished and the country’s constitution suspended.
This comes after President Kabore’s party said that he survived an attempted assassination earlier in the day.
Several armored vehicles of the presidential fleet, riddled with bullets, could be seen near the president’s residence on Monday morning, with one spattered with blood.
Residents of the capital city Ouagadougou have taken to the street to celebrate the coup and ouster of President Kabore who had prior to the coup urged the army to surrender their arms and adopt dialogue.
