Speculation of a planned strike to protest the removal of subsidy on petroleum has been denied by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).
According to the NLC, the rumors that it is planning to embark on a strike today June 2, is false.
Recall that an earlier meeting between the NLC chiefs and representatives of the government met a brick wall.
After several hours of meeting with the Federal Government, the NLC demanded that a return to the status quo by reversing the price of fuel before resuming negotiations with the NLC.
The National President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Joe Ajaero, who criticized the removal of subsidy, said that the NLC has to protect the Nigerian workforce and proffer additional solutions.
However, in a reaction to the rumoured proposed strike, Head of Information and Public Affairs of NLC, Benson Upah, asked Nigerians to disregard the rumor.
“Our attention has been drawn to stories circulating in the social media claiming that the NLC would begin protest action on June 2 against the increase in the pump price of petrol. In as much as we are outraged by this mindless price increase which is intended to bring untold hardship to Nigerians, we have no plan to start any action on June 2. What we do have for now are organ meetings slated for June 2 to deliberate on the price issue,” he said
Upah said the NLC would keep Nigerians informed on its next line of action after meetings.
