For reasons best known to me, I initially chose to steer clear of the Natasha-Akpabio saga—a whirlwind of controversy that has sparked intense debates and captivated public attention. However, as the storm continues to rage, it has become increasingly difficult to ignore, especially with many notable Nigerians weighing in on the matter.
POLITICS OF LEADERSHIP WITHOUT CREDIBILTY
The intervention of the smooth-talking former governor of Edo State, Senator Adams Oshiomhole, on the Senate floor piqued my interest. I immediately turned to my iPad to put my thoughts together, but somehow, I hesitated to post them. Perhaps it was the fear of stirring up an almost dormant issue, especially when the Lande and Baba Tee drama seemed to dominate the social media space. Nonetheless, Oshiomhole delivered a brilliant submission on achieving truce amidst the ongoing brouhaha, offering unbiased advice to Senator Natasha.
Now, I crave your indulgence to permit me a moment of my own bias. It is undeniable and unshakable that Senator Natasha’s presence is striking. Forget what the critics may say—her beauty is so captivating that it could leave even the most composed individuals in awe. Her elegance and charm command admiration wherever she goes. This allure leads me to believe that, for many men, maintaining discipline in her presence would be a challenge.
This reminds me of the journalist who once fled Nigeria after controversially suggesting that even Holy Prophet Mohammed (SAW) might have been moved by the stunning array of beauties gathered for a world beauty contest in Nigeria years ago.
Just yesterday, Senator Ogunlewe echoed a similar sentiment, remarking that Natasha’s beauty is such that it’s hard for any man not to admire her, concluding that her beauty is the source of her problems. Yet, a now less prominent actress dismissed this, claiming that aside from her light skin, the Kogi Senator is not particularly attractive. That’s her unpopular opinion, though.
With this in mind, I want to believe that our distinguished Senate President remains a man with blood flowing in his veins. It may not be entirely false to suggest he might wish to know her better than just as the Senator from Kogi in the red chambers. I understand how serious this could be and do not want anyone to draw unnecessary conclusions from my opinion. It remains just what it is—an opinion.
Shifting to a more serious note, while disciplinary actions are sometimes necessary to uphold societal and institutional integrity, the severity of the six-month suspension penalty in this case raises concerns about fairness and proportionality. Comparing this response to using a sledgehammer to kill an ant would not be an exaggeration—it highlights the excessive nature of the punishment relative to the alleged transgressions.
To truly understand the gravity of Senator Natasha’s suspension, one must examine the circumstances leading to this decision. While she may have crossed certain boundaries or acted in ways deemed inappropriate, the punishment appears disproportionate. Her radiant presence, notable contributions, and actions suggest that, while accountability is essential, democracy thrives on measured and just responses to misconduct. Heavy-handed measures risk fostering an atmosphere of fear, silencing lawmakers, and discouraging open dialogue.
Rather than resorting to extreme actions, legislative bodies should consider more balanced approaches. Alternatives such as temporary suspensions proportionate to the offense, or even additional training on ethical conduct could ensure accountability while allowing Senator Natasha to continue serving her constituents. Such measures would uphold democratic principles and preserve the dignity of individuals like Natasha, who bring an inspiring presence to the political arena.
Excessive punishment has broader implications. It sets a troubling precedent, cultivating a political culture where perceived wrongdoing is met with disproportionate consequences. This risks eroding public trust in governmental institutions and diverting attention from critical policy discussions. By advocating for fair and constructive alternatives, we can empower remarkable leaders like Senator Natasha to represent their constituents effectively while upholding the values of democracy.
So, this is a plea to the Senate to revisit their judgment, resolve the issue, and restore peace to the nation’s upper lawmaking house.
