The Speaker, Imo state House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Uwajumogu, has strongly condemned last week’s gruesome murder of Chief Tobias Onyekele, a Commissioner in the Imo state House of Assembly Civil Service Commission by yet-to-be identified gunmen.
Chief Onyekele, who until his death, a Chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC, and one of the avid supporters of the Speaker’s senatorial ambition for Okigwe zone, was reportedly murdered in cold blood by hoodlums along the ever busy Ama-wire junction, Orji-Owerri road on Sunday afternoon.
The Speaker in a release made available to journalists in Owerri yesterday, by his Senior Special Assistant on media, Mr. Emeka Ahaneku, decried what he called high level of violence and unwarranted assassinations of his close associates and supporters, with barely three weeks to the conduct of the 2015 general elections in the country.
According to him, “it is highly disturbing and nauseating too how our state, which had hitherto witnessed relative peace and tranquility in recent times, would be made to unnecessarily contend with such despicable act of violence, especially, now that the country is poised for the upcoming electoral contest”, he submitted.
He further described the late Commissioner, as an honest and dedicated gentleman, who had distinguished his entire life to the service of God and humanity, stressing that his personal ideologies were always hinged on the use of public office for the maximum benefit of the general populace.
Rt. Hon. Uwajumogu, maintained that the state chapter of the APC, the Okigwe senatorial zone and indeed, the entire state have lost a rare gem, whose legendary contributions to the positive development of the state would have had far-reaching effect in the lives of its citizenry.
He however, called on the relevant security agencies operating in the state, to as a matter of urgency, swing into actions and ensure that perpetrators of such “barbaric and dastardly act” were made to face the full weight of the law, a punitive measure which according to him, would adequately serve as deterrent to persons who might be nursing similar outrageous act of disrupting the existing public peace in the state
