Following allegations of sexual harasment brought against the police by some women recently arrested during a raid at Caramelo Night Club in Abuja, the force has stated that it will penalise any officer found guilty of molesting any detainees.
A statement signed by Danjuma Tanimu, of the Abuja Police Command said a high powered team had been constituted to investigate the veracity of the allegations.
Further, Mr Tanimu said that invitations had been sent out to relevant individuals that would assist in uncovering the truth.
Assuring the public of the police’s zero tolerance for unprofessional disregard to human rights, he said those found guilty of the offence would be penalised.
Recall that the FCTA Joint Task Team, comprising the Department of Development Control, Abuja Environmental Protection Board and the Social Development Secretariat, raided the club on April 26 and arrested about 70 women.
The women were held in custody at Utako Police Division before being granted bail and arraigned at a mobile court on April 29.
They alleged that they were sexually assaulted at the police station, some even said that officers used sachet water nylon as condoms in the assault.
