Nigeria’s former Minister of Finance, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, will know if she will be the next Director-General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) on February 15th
In a statement released by the WTO on Tuesday, February 9, the organisation disclosed that it will be convening its general council meeting.
Further, the statement said that the meeting will be held in Geneva, Switzerland, at noon.
The organisation said: “The WTO’s General Council will hold a special meeting on 15 February at 15:00 Geneva time to consider the appointment of the next Director-General. The meeting will take place in a virtual format.”
Earlier, Okonjo-Iweala emerged the only candidate for the position of Director-General of the WTO, following the withdrawal of her major contender and South Korean trade minister, Yoo Myung-hee.
Yoo made the decision on Friday, February 5, after discussions with the U.S. and other major nations, and took various issues into account especially the need to revitalize the multilateral organisation.
